ALAMANCE COUNTY, N.C. — Some Alamance-Burlington School System employees may lose their jobs.
That's because ABSS said it's considering staff cuts due to its financial crisis.
The district held a special meeting Friday, May 4 to figure out how to make up for its budget shortfall.
Interim Superintendent Dr. Bill Harrison said ABSS has "kicked the can down the road for three years, and now it has hit the wall."
Right now it said it's down $3.5 million.
The district said it needs to reduce spending by $7.5 million by next school year to get out of the red.
Part of ABSS's plan to reduce its deficit is removing some positions and re-aligning others.
Harrison said that this budget proposal will make ABSS deficit-neutral, but it will still have no fund balance. It will take years to rebuild the fund balance, the school system said.
ABSS will vote on the proposal on May 14.
ABSS has been through massive upheaval ever since it discovered mold in its schools last August.
It cost about $26 million to clear out the damage.
In February, ABSS and its Chief Financial Officer Kim McVey parted ways.
The role of overseeing finances fell to Deputy Superintendent Lowell Rogers.
Then, he was suspended for failing to report a crime against a student.
Then in March, ABSS parted ways with Superintendent Dain Butler.
Now the district is led by interim superintendent Harrison.
