NORTH CAROLINA, USA — The Biden-Harris Administration is helping school districts go green.
The administration announced nearly $900 million in funds to replace older, diesel-fueled school buses across 530 districts. The money will stretch across nearly every state.
The rebates will help school districts purchase over 3,400 electric and hybrid school buses. Researchers say the old busses have been linked to asthma and other conditions that harm the health of students and surrounding communities.
Among the recipients are 11 North Carolina school districts. They'll get more than $18M to make replacements.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools requested the most funds with around $8.5M covering a request for 25 electric buses and the replacement of 25 buses.
North Carolina A&T grad and EPA administrator Michael Regan will make a formal announcement highlighting how the program will reduce greenhouse gas emissions, save schools money, and better protect children's health.
Now that districts have the funds they will need to find producers for the buses.
Here in the Triad, Thomas Built Buses is one of the largest manufacturers of electric buses in the country. They've already committed to providing more than 60 electric buses to school districts in North Carolina in efforts to push clean energy forward.
Last year Randolph County Schools was the first school system in our state to receive an electric bus.
