Duke Energy tour their newest natural gas power plant in Eden.

CHARLOTTE, NC -- Duke Energy has reached a deal with North Carolina to pay $7 million to resolve claims related to groundwater problems at its coal ash facilities in the state.

The state says the agreement announced Tuesday will also trigger accelerated remediation estimated to cost an additional $10 million to $15 million for Duke Energy.

Duke had been facing a fine of about $25 million for groundwater issues at a Wilmington plant.

An administrative law judge dismissed a proceeding related to that fine because of the settlement.

Duke says the $7 million will also resolve alleged groundwater violations at its 14 North Carolina facility.
