New York, NY -- David Letterman is paying tribute to an unlikely star he helped create. Last night's show was Letterman's first fresh episode since Calvert DeForest died last Monday. DeForest played Larry "Bud" Melman on Letterman's late night show, appearing on both the NBC and CBS versions. Letterman says people loved him. And Letterman credits DeForest with being one of the reasons the shows were so successful.Letterman says people didn't know if the white-haired, bespectacled nebbish was acting or not. But Letterman says DeForest was just himself. DeForest was 85 and last appeared on Letterman's program in 2002.
