Woman shot in the chest while watching fireworks in Winston-Salem, police say

Winston-Salem police said a woman was watching fireworks when a stray bullet hit her in the chest on N. Main Street.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A woman was shot in the chest while watching fireworks in Winston-Salem Tuesday night, according to police.

Winston-Salem police said they received a call to the 1400 block of North Main Street about a shooting. When they arrived, police said 51-year-old Sylvia McKellar was found lying on the front lawn of a home suffering from a gunshot wound to her chest.

Officers said McKellar was taken to a local hospital to be treated as they do not know the extent of her injuries.

After an investigation, investigators said McKellar was sitting on the front lawn, watching fireworks and socializing with friends, when she was struck by what is believed to be a stray round. 

This investigation is ongoing.
