KERNERSVILLE, N.C. — Forsyth County Sheriff's said a 53-year-old woman was found dead and a man was injured after a shooting on Weatherton Drive.
The shooting happened around 4:30 a.m. Monday morning.
The man was taken to the hospital and is undergoing surgery. Officers are actively searching for the suspect.
People in the neighborhood agree, this area is known to be quiet and safe.
"It's amazing how quiet this neighborhood usually is," said Robert Parr, who lives in the neighborhood.
Just after 4:30 a.m. Monday, that all changed.
"This is the only bad happening we've had since we've been here," said Pat Crotts, who lives in the neighborhood.
Crotts said she couldn't sleep and suddenly she heard something just down the road.
"I heard, pop pop, and then I kept laying in the bed listening and then it was just a few seconds and I heard pop, pop, pop and I thought oh what is going on over there," said Crotts.
When Crotts looked out the window, she saw a flood of police lights. It's a similar picture that several other neighbors described.
Robert Parr lives across the street from where the shooting happened. He said the woman who was shot and killed was very quiet and did not interact with other neighbors.
Parr said he saw a lot of activity and people coming in and out of the house.
"We were hoping it was just maybe a drug bust or maybe just a get together, so we were very sad when we heard there was a fatality and then maybe a little more sad when we found out it was the young lady because you know she was the one really living in the house as the main occupant," said Parr.
Parr said the 53-year-old victim lived in that home. The Forsyth County Sheriff said this is a homicide investigation and deputies are still searching for the suspect.
"It's been a long morning, we've been out here since about four this morning trying to get search warrants trying to make sure we go by the numbers getting everything done," said Forsyth County Sheriff Bobby Kimbrough Jr.
Neighbors are upset after seeing such a tragedy in their community.
"We are sad," said Parr.
"I wish everybody would just remember them in your prayers," said Crotts.
