ELON, N.C. — Troopers say a driver who witnessed a hit-and-run helped catch the driver who left the scene.
The two-vehicle crash happened around 6:30 a.m. Monday on I-40/85 east near University Drive in Elon.
Troopers say Munira Crnalic, 57, tried to merge in the right lane and hit a pickup truck driven by Kinny Lee Smith, Jr., 34.
Smith went off the roadway, hit a ditch, overturned and then hit a fence. Troopers say Crnalic left the scene. Smith and his wife were taken to the hospital for minor injuries.
"It upsets me," Smith says."What if I would have died? What if my wife would have died and you didn’t have concern or remorse to stop and check on us?"
Smith says he was on his way to work when this happened. Cox Toyota caught the crash on camera. Smith's truck flipped 6 times before finally stopping upright.
"I wasn’t worried about any of my injuries," he tells. "I was worried about my wife and getting his tag and looking at the highway making sure no one else had been hit at the same time. I mean, it’s a lot going on there."
Troopers say a witness to the crash followed Crnalic to her workplace and called Highway Patrol. The investigating trooper then responded to Crnalic's location, and arrested her for Felony Hit-and-Run, Reckless Driving, and Unsafe Lane Change.
Crnalic was placed in Alamance County Jail under a $20,000 secured bond.
