WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A gas station clerk shot a man after she observed him shoplifting Monday morning, according to the Winston-Salem Police Department.

According to police, officers responded to the Mobil gas station at 500 Akron Drive in Winston-Salem after a report of a shooting. When they arrived, they met with Katherine Harris, an employee at the gas station, who told them she observed Alvis Viotis Hackney shoplifting from the store.

After confronting Hackney outside the store, Harris "discharged a firearm outside the business, striking him." Hackney managed to leave the scene, but he was later located by officers and was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Hackney was charged with misdemeanor larceny. Police say he "declined to pursue prosecution regarding the shooting incident."
