WILKESBORO, N.C. — The Wilkes County Sheriff's Office arrested one of its former deputies on Aug. 10 after he allegedly vandalized several headstones at the graveyard at Antioch Baptist Church in Wilkesboro.

David Morlando, 30 of Roaring River, was charged with six felony counts of disturbing a casket/grave marker. An investigation by the Sheriff's Office concluded that Morlando "dislocated" five headstones from their bases and damaged a sixth headstone at its base.

According to the Sheriff's Office, Morlando has not been affiliated with them since he left his position as a deputy in 2022. He most recently served as a state trooper for the North Carolina Highway Patrol.
