Suspect arrested for tampering with evidence in Burlington murder investigation

The Alamance County Sheriff's Office arrested Paul William Atkins for allegedly obstructing justice by tampering with evidence in a murder investigation.

BURLINGTON, N.C. — Update: The Alamance County Sherrif's Office has arrested Paul William Atkins and charged him with obstruction of justice and altering of evidence, destroying or stealing evidence. 

Atkins was involved in the altercation that led to the April 9, 2020 shooting and death of Lee Creamer of Burlington, N.C., Alamance deputies said.

The Alamance County Sheriff’s Office was called to the area of East Old Glencoe Road and Mobile Manor Road for reports of the shooting. When they arrived, they found Lee Glenn Creamer lying on the ground in front of his residence suffering a gunshot wound and not breathing, deputies said. Deputies immediately administered CPR until the arrival of medical responders. Creamer was taken to UNC Hospital Chapel Hill where he died, officials said.

During the investigation, deputies learned about a confrontation between Creamer and several individuals at another residence that escalated to gunfire. 

Evidence and interviews with witnesses led to 17-year-old Zaire “Lando” Mills as a person of interest in the case.

The sheriff's office said Mills turned himself in on Friday, April 10. Mills was charged with felony assault with a deadly weapon with intent to inflict serious injury. H was transported to a youth home to await trial, officials said.

Deputies said there is no evidence to show that there are any individuals who are a threat to the public still at large. The investigation is still ongoing. Anyone with information on the case is asked to call Alamance County Crimestoppers at 336-229-7100.
