Sister of Orange County escaped convict appears in court

Monique Brady, 43, has been released on a $30,000 bond. The judge ordered a condition on her release that she have no contact with her brother Ramone Alston.

ORANGE COUNTY, N.C. — The sister of an escaped convict appeared in court Thursday after she was charged with aiding and abetting her brother.

Monique Brady, 43, was charged Wednesday with aiding and abetting her brother Ramone Alston.

Alston, an inmate, escaped custody in Orange County sparking a days long search.

In court, prosecutors did not go into detail on how Brady helped her brother.

Brady is the second person charged with helping Alston escape.

Jacobia Crisp from Alamance County was charged with knowingly hiding, feeding, and helping Alston.

Crisp and Brady both face the same charges.

Crisp and Alston were both arrested on August 16, but the two were not together.

Orange County Sheriff Charles Blackwood said the escape was organized as well as questionable.

"It's been a lot involved and extensive search as you all know and an extensive investigation was initiated. The investigation is ongoing and I can't rule out that other folks might get arrested,” Sheriff Blackwood said.

Court documents show Brady has a criminal history.

In 2015 and 2019, she was charged with communicating threats in both Guilford and Chatham County. Those cases were dismissed.

Alston is serving a life sentence in prison for killing a 1-year-old child on Christmas Day in 2015.

The judge said Brady cannot have any contact with her brother Alston, and Crisp.

Brady's next court date is set for September 13.
