WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A woman was shot twice after hearing her car alarm and going to check on it.
The shooting happened on East Drive just before midnight in Winston-Salem. Police say 21-year-old Ebony Stone was inside a house with a man and an infant before going outside to her car.
When she went outside, multiple people shot at her and her home. Police said she had 2 non-life-threatening injuries, and the man and baby were not injured.
The suspects left the scene in a white car before police arrived at the scene.
Neighbors said they heard the gunshots, and are scared to let their children go outside to play.
"It's so scary because we have little kids playing outside and I'm like, what's going to happen if my sister-in-law is here and there's a shooting? It's going to be scary. We just want to have more protection of this community, of these apartments," one neighbor said.
This investigation is ongoing as police are still searching for the suspects.
Just last week, we heard from Winston-Salem Chief of Police, William Penn.
He spoke to the increased crime across the city and in the downtown area.
Chief Penn stresses to the public to say something if they see something unusual.
"There are violent crimes occurring in all parts of our city that must be addressed. We must not forget that downtown is not the only affected area with violence. Our goal is to safeguard the entire community we call home," Chief Penn said.
The Executive Director of North Carolinians Against Gun Violence, Becky Ceartas, said there are proven policies and programs in place to help combat gun violence.
For example, Community Violence Intervention programs treats gun violence as an epidemic and focuses on areas most impacted.
"So we always just ask where these guns are coming from and how can we prevent them from winding up on the streets in the first place," Ceartas said.
