Rockingham County student charged for mass violence threats against school

Investigators said the student pretended to be another student while making the claims.
GCS, WS/FCS and ABSS all said they’ve received non-credible threats recently.

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, N.C. — The Rockingham County Sheriff's Office said it is actively seeking juvenile charges against a Bethany Charter School student for making mass threats of violence against the school.

Investigators said they originally looked into reports of threats against the charter school in a text thread with seven other students. In the thread the student identified themself by a different name and said they were going to "shoot up the school."

Officials eventually discovered the student who made the threat was pretending to be another student.

A detective used investigative technologies to find when and where the text was sent. The information was then given to law enforcement at the North Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice.

A juvenile petition was sent in against the student for Communicating Threats of Mass Violence Against Educational Property.

Information about the student's identity has been withheld.
