'It's scary, but it’s the reality' | Parents react after shooting on Reynolds High campus

One student was hurt in a shooting right after school let out for the day.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — School leaders and investigators have not named the student shot but they are at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist being treated for their bullet wound.

We also know that the student is stable as of Tuesday.

While they're recovering physically many parents and students in the district are emotionally traumatized and shared frustrations.

"We should not have to be doing this and they should not have to be going through this," said one Wiley Middle School parent. "I didn’t have to go through this when I was a child"

“Babies, They’re babies," said Wiley parent Tara Snow. "Why would somebody do this."

Tearful reunions after a horror-stricken day at  R. J Reynold’s High School in Winston-Salem.

Renylod’s freshman  Ethan Sheridan said shortly after school let out a lockdown was announced.

“We just heard a gunshot and I started running," Sheridan said. "I didn’t look back and a few minutes later that’s when police came and it was confirmed someone had got shot."

While students were held in place for about an hour Forsyth County Sheriff Deputies said they learned a student was shot in the leg outside the school after a fight.

Sheridan said he knew the student who was shot.

“I was like dang that’s crazy what happened to him," Sheridan said "We’re associates and we see each other from time to time. He speaks to me and he’s a cool dude.”

Once all was clear students from Wiley and Reynolds were released to their parents at a nearby Harris teeter.

Parents stopped in the rain to take a moment to embrace their children.

"I’m so relieved I just want to take him home and just hug him," Snow said.

It took several hours for every student to return with their family.

Tamela Payne-“It's scary, but it’s the reality of things," said Pamela Payne Sheridan's mother. "But we’re not going to let fear stop us from things. We know that there are bad things that happen all the time.”

Parents said the school district handled the situation as best they could and they’re just grateful no lives were lost and this didn’t end in a greater tragedy.
