GREENSBORO, N.C. — A big reward is on the table for information leading to the arrest of the person who robbed a USPS carrier in Greensboro on June 20.
The U.S. Postal Inspection Service said in a post on X it is offering a reward of up to $150,000. The robbery happened at Stonesthrow Apartments on South Holden Road just before 11 a.m. Police said the mail carrier reported that a man approached him with a gun and ran away.
"It's a young guy. He approached me with a gun and he demanded my keys," the mailman can be heard saying to an operator on a 911 call.
It was the third mail carrier robbery in Greensboro within a week. Arrests were made in the two other cases.
We reached out to the United States Postal Inspection Service for a comment on the robberies.
It released a statement saying:
Postal Inspectors are working with our local law enforcement partners in the recent ongoing investigations of postal carrier robberies. The safety of our postal employees is part of the mission we uphold. We conduct stand up talks with our carriers to be vigilant and keep an eye on their surroundings. The U.S. Postal Inspection Service has a joint initiative with the Postal Service called Project Safe Delivery. It focuses on increasing physical security measures and advancing technology of the Postal Service to reduce letter carrier robberies and mail theft. We are asking the public to help keep the men and women who delivery mail in your neighborhoods safe by providing any tips and information related to the robberies to Postal Inspectors at 877-876-2455.
USPS launched Project Safe Delivery last year.
Since the start of the project, USPS said there were 643 postal carrier robberies, an increase of nearly 30%
USPS said the initiative has led to more than 1200 arrests since last May, and reported robberies of letter carriers have decreased by 19%.
USPS said there are several steps you can take to protect your mail, and your mail carriers.
1. Don't let mail sit in your mailbox for long periods of time.
2. Deposit outgoing mail at secure locations, like a post office.
3. Keep an eye on your postal worker. If you see something that looks suspicious, call 911.
