LIBERTY, N.C. — The Randolph County Sheriff's Office arrested a man late last week in Liberty after he allegedly stole an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) from a construction site.
Deputies responded to a call of an apparent larceny in progress, and after arriving at a construction site at Julian Airport Road they learned that Nicholas Anthony Berry, 30, had allegedly stolen the construction company's work ATV and driven it to another building on site.
An employee told deputies that he followed Berry and observed him "holding approximately 500 pounds of copper." After he was confronted, Berry reportedly dropped the copper and tried to flee the area on the ATV, but the employee managed to block the vehicle and confiscate the keys until detectives arrived.
According to the Sheriff's Office, a search of Berry's vehicle turned up two batteries and a power saw that had the construction company's name on it.
Berry was arrested and subsequently transported to the Randolph County Detention Center, and he received a $5,000-secured bond. He is being charged with felony larceny from a construction site, attempted felony larceny and second-degree trespassing.
Berry's first court appearance is set for Aug. 28 in Randolph County District Court.
