Inmate accused of attacking jail staff in Randolph County

Randolph County deputies said 60-year-old John Anthony Gieb was charged with felony assault after hitting a government official/employee.

RANDOLPH COUNTY, N.C. — An inmate at the Randolph County Detention Center assaulted staff members and a nurse Wednesday, deputies say.

A detention officer was helping the nurse with the medication disbursement when they noticed 60-year-old John Anthony Gieb was abnormal.

They went into his cell to medically evaluate him. Gieb pulled away and appeared to have seizure-like episodes.

While waiting for EMS, he became combative and was retrained after he assaulted the nurse and multiple officers.

Following hospital evaluation, it was determined there was nothing medically wrong with Gieb and he was taken back to the detention center.

Gieb was charged with felony assault causing physical injury to a detention employee and misdemeanor assault on a government official/employee. The bond was denied, according to deputies.
