Video shows Randolph County ambulance ram into Highway Patrol car, woman arrested for allegedly stealing ambulance, deputies say

Gretchen Patterson was issued over a million dollars total in secured bonds.

RANDOLPH COUNTY, N.C. — A woman was arrested after allegedly stealing an ambulance and leading deputies on a chase on I-73 on Saturday, April 6, according to the Randolph County Sheriff's Office.

The ambulance was stolen from the Randolph Health/Hospital around 10:31 p.m., deputies said.

Randolph Communications was able to track the vehicle, traveling north on I-73/74, passing Spero Road. The ambulance was located by deputies shortly after.

The chase began when the driver refused to stop.

The chase ended in Greensboro, near Holden Road, when the ambulance crashed into Highway Patrol vehicles.

One neighbor recorded the entire crash on her camera.

She told WFMY that she has lived in her home near Sumner Elementary for 70 years and this takes the cake on most bizarre.

"It was a bad wreck. She was ramming all of the cop cars. It was crazy when they finally got her stopped, she got stuck in the ditch right in our field. When she finally got stopped all guns were drawn, and it was pretty scary there for a while. We didn't know what was going to happen," Pattie Schenk said.

The driver, Gretchen Shaylyn Patterson, was arrested and faces multiple charges, including stealing the ambulance, reckless driving, and fleeing the police.

She also received charges from the Asheboro Police Department for felony larceny of a motor vehicle.

Patterson was taken to the Randolph County Detention Center where she was issued a $750,000 total secured bond, she appeared in court Monday.

According to the Randolph County Sheriff's Office website, Patterson is being held in a maximum security cell.

Additionally, the Greensboro Police Department issued charges for misdemeanor hit/run leave scene property damage.

State Troopers served her charges for five counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill an emergency worker.

The magistrate issued a $1,000,000 total secured bond and is scheduled to appear in Guilford County District Court.

Patterson is set to appear in a Guilford County courtroom Wednesday.
