HIGH POINT, N.C. — Warrants have been obtained on the father of an 18-year-old who was killed in a car crash, Sunday morning in High Point.
The High Point Police Department has issued the warrants as a result of the investigation into the crash.
The department has charged Roderick Rashan White with 1 count of Second Degree Murder, 4 counts of Felony Serious Injury by Vehicle While DWI, 1 count of Felony Hit and Run Involving Death, 1 count of Driving While Impaired, 1 count of Driving While Licensed Revoked after Impaired Driving Revocation, and 1 count of Speeding 103 mph in a 45 mph zone.
Police say White was driving a 2020 Chevy Blazer over 100 mph on East Martin Luther King Jr. Dr., while impaired.
Investigators say the car hit several trees and a fence before coming to a stop in the grass and catching fire.
Police say the 18-year-old was killed and several others seriously injured following the single-car crash, Sunday.
"Roderick White is an amazing father to his sons wanting nothing less but a better future for both. I have never seen a young man with the type of relationship that he had with both of his sons," said Tonya Thornton, who said she knows the father and son.
"This accident was just that! He loves both sons and trust me when I say he would give his life for theirs," she said.
"I watched as Roderick White grew into such a man the past few years teaching his children to be better men than he was at their age. He started his own business with the hopes of leaving a legacy to his sons, both of his sons," said Thornton.
According to the High Point Police Department, the crash happened around 3 a.m. on E. Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. between N. Centennial St. and S. University Parkway.
Police say White ran away from the crash shortly before police arrived.
The department says the crash only involved the 2020 Chevy Blazer, which police say was occupied by six people when it ran off the road and hit multiple trees.
Police say several of the passengers were ejected and suffered serious injuries. One of the passengers, Roderick White Jr.,18, was killed during the crash.
Investigators say the injuries of the other individuals involved in the accident range from facial lacerations to a broken back, but they are expected to survive.
The High Point Police Department Traffic Unit responded to begin a reconstruction of the crash. And the crash remains under investigation.
Police say all parties who were involved in the crash were not wearing seatbelts.
Investigators say information regarding possible charges and cause of the crash will be made available when the investigation is complete.
