WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A man is dead after an officer-involved shooting in Winston-Salem Saturday.
Winston-Salem police said officers responded to the 2800 block of Teresa Avenue where a neighbor told police Shane William Sims, 33, had stolen property from another neighbor shortly before 3:30 p.m.
Officers tried to contact Sims but police said Sims threatened them by saying he would kill the police.
As the investigation continued, officers discovered Sims had additional warrants for arrests unrelated to the robbery.
SWAT was called to assist after the threats from Sims, the knowledge of weapons in the house , and the discovery of additional warrants.
While officers surrounded the house trying to deescalate the situation through speaking commands to Sims, police said Sims came out the house with a long gun several times and was unwilling to talk to officers.
Police said Sims came out of the home again, ignored the commands, and aimed the gun directly at officers shortly before 6 p.m.
One officer then fired a gun and hit Sims, according to police.
First responders attempted life-saving measures but Sims died from his injuries.
Police said no officers were injured.
Officers said Sims' unrelated outstanding warrants for arrest included felony Breaking and Entering, and misdemeanor Communicating Threats.
There were two additional people that were at the scene. They were not injured during the shooting.
The State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) will investigate the shooting.
Winston-Salem police said they will complete an internal administrative investigation through their Professional Standards Division.
Police said they will not be releasing the identity of the officer involved in the shooting.
The officer has been placed on administrative leave as is standard procedure.
