Online Sale Meeting Ends in Armed Robbery

Police say a woman was robbed at gunpoint, after meeting up with someone she met online to buy an iPhone.

BURLINGTON, N.C. -- Police say a woman was robbed at gunpoint, after meeting up with someone she met through an app to buy an iPhone.

Officers said the armed robbery happened just before 9:30 p.m. at 530 S. Graham-Hopedale Road. The victim told police she met a stranger at the Grace Brooke Apartments’ parking lot about ten minutes beforehand to buy an iPhone through an online sales app.

Police said the victim told them the suspect got into her car with another person standing outside the car. She said the suspect put a gun to her head, demanded her money, then punched her in the head. The victim claimed the suspect took her purse and removed an undisclosed amount of money.

The victim said the two suspects ran away toward Grace Avenue through the apartment complex.

The suspects were described as follows:

  • Black male, between 18-24 years old, about 5’7” and 130 to 150lbs, and wearing a white shirt and red shorts
  • Black male, between 18-24 years old, between 5’7” and 5’10”, and wearing a black shirt

Police said the victim was not injured during this incident.

For a safer option to make a purchase, the Burlington Police Department encourages anyone who wants to make an online to in-person property transaction to meet at the designated “Transaction Zone” in front of the police department. The Transaction Zone has 24-hours video surveillance.
