APEX, N.C. — An inmate who went missing during a job assignment in Apex Wednesday was caught eight hours later, hiding under plastic on the side of a highway, NCDPS says.
The North Carolina Department of Adult Corrections said 44-year-old Thomas Swann left his work detail area on Schieffelin Road in Apex around noon.
After a law enforcement officer saw someone on foot along U.S. Route 1, they went to investigate. Authorities identified Swann as the person underneath the plastic and took him back to prison where he was charged with escape.
Officials said Swann is serving a seven-year sentence for habitual breaking and entering.
He was scheduled for release on March 25, 2027.
Swann is 5 feet 7 inches tall, weighing 190 pounds. He's bald with blue eyes, heavily tattooed with prominent tattoos on his arms and legs.
He is originally from Cumberland County.
If anyone has any information on Swann's whereabouts, please call 911 or call Sanford Correctional Center at 919-895-7036.
