North Asheboro Park shooting update: Teen suspect's parents arrested

The parents of the teen suspect were charged with accessory after the fact.

ASHEBORO, N.C. — Police said the parents of a teen accused in a deadly park shooting helped him evade arrest.

On Thursday, police arrested the mother Denisse Vera-Covarrubias at her home. The father, Alfredo Martinez Ramirez, turned himself in to Randolph County Jail. They've both been charged with felony accessory after the fact. Mom was given a $25,000 secured bond, and dad was given a $30,000 secured bond.

The shooting happened at North Asheboro Park on May 3. Police arrested the teen suspect a week later at a home in Statesville.

A few days after the arrest, the victim, 16-year-old Pedro Ortiz, died from his injuries at a local hospital. He went to Southwestern Randolph High School where he played soccer. Investigators do not believe he was the intended target.

The Randolph County District Attorney's Office is going to present upgraded charges for the teen suspect to a grand jury on June 3. Initially, he faced an attempted murder charge.
