NC Criminals Cloning Cards To Steal Your Cash

The Monroe Police Department shared several photos of suspects they say have been using cloned debit cards to withdraw money from ATMs.

Burglars are becoming as brazen as the holiday season is bright.

The Monroe Police Department shared several photos of suspects they say have been using cloned debit cards to withdraw money from ATMs. Police said they've been seen driving an early 2000s Toyota Sienna minivan with a maroon hood.

You work hard for your money and the thought of someone else being able to use it is a scary thought," said a Charlotte resident.

In 2017, North Carolina reportedly found 650 skimmers -- double the number found in 2016. Experts expect the total number of skimmers found in 2018 to be up from last year.

Scammers copied Mary Mariczek's debit card.

"I ran home to check my account and realized some money was missing from my account, and then the lightbulb went off that something weird had happened," said Mariczek.

Authorities said one way to detect a skimmer is to use the Bluetooth on your cell phone because skimmers transmitting through Bluetooth will likely show up as a long list of letter and numbers under discoverable devices.

"If you would've walked up to the pump, you wouldn't known it was on there," said Matthew Melvin with Shelby Police.
