MOUNT AIRY, N.C. — A woman died several days after deputies said her son-in-law assaulted her. The Surry County Sheriff's Office said the man fatally shot himself right after the attack.

Deputies got a call to a domestic incident on Country Fields Lane in Mount Airy on January 28. They said Randy Schimp, 43, "aggressively assaulted his wife and mother-in-law."

Deputies found Schimp's wife in the yard with "obvious signs of assault." Then they went inside and found Schimp's mother-in-law, Phyllis Wilkinson, unresponsive on the floor.

Deputies said they started giving commands to Schimp, who ran to another room where he shot himself. They tried to save his life, but he died at the scene.

EMS took Wilkinson to a hospital for life-threatening injuries. She died from those injuries on February 9.

The sheriff's office did not give the condition of the wife. We've reached out to learn more.

The incident is still under investigation.
