WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — An unusual string of robberies is prompting an investigation in Winston-Salem.
Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Utilities said they are working to address recent thefts of the cast-iron lids seen on water meter boxes in the Marble Street and Bretton Street areas.
Anyone caught tampering with any parts of water meters or the water system can be charged with fines and a crime for each theft, according to the Winston-Salem Water System Resolution.
Missing lids can cause hazards to pedestrians. Not to mention, it creates a significant expense for WS/FC Utilities because these replacement lids are no longer available. In all, the entire meter box has to be replaced.
If individuals witness suspicious activity involving a water meter, please report it to WSPD by calling 336-773-7700. If a water meter box lid has already been stolen, submit a tip via the WSPD Text-A-Tip Program at 336-276-1717 or file a report online.
