ASHEBORO, N.C. — Deputies say a man accused of trying to use a dead man's checks has been tied to a home break-in.

Randolph County Sheriff's Office arrested Dalton Wayne Coble on Monday.

Investigators say they got a call about Coble trying to buy items at the Asheboro Walmart with a check that didn't match his ID back in January. Coble reportedly acted very nervous and ran out of the store, leaving his ID and the check behind.

Deputies went to the address listed on the check, and discovered the home had recently been broken into.

A neighbor looking after the property told them the homeowner died and that no one was living there at the time of the break-in.

Investigators believe Coble broke into the home and stole the checks.

Coble is charged with felony breaking and entering, felony attempt to obtain property by false pretense, and misdemeanor possession stolen goods.

He was placed in jail under a $10,000 secured bond.
