Man faked being law enforcement, told woman her husband died in a shooting, deputies say

Deputies say the man went to a home in Summerfield and told a woman her husband had died.

SUMMERFIELD, N.C. — Rockingham County Sheriff's Deputies are searching for a man accused of pretending to be a law enforcement officer and then telling a woman her husband had been killed in a shooting.

Deputies got a call to a home in the Windsome Forest neighborhood off US-158 West in Summerfield shortly before noon on Thursday. They spoke with a woman who reported that a man, dressed in what looked like an officer's uniform, came to her door and told her that her husband had died in a shooting at the "Madison Walmart." According to the report, the suspect even called the woman's husband by name.

Upset by the news but still believing the man was a real officer, the woman called a friend. She then told the phony officer her friend was on her way over, and the man quickly left the area.

Rockingham County Sheriff Page told WFMY News 2 the woman let the man into her home. He warns that if you are ever in doubt of a visitor call 9-1-1.

"If you have someone there who is representing themselves as an officer and you still have concern don't let them into your house. Call 9-1-1 and our dispatchers can verify our dispatchers can verify there is an officer at your door," he said.

Deputies said the woman then contacted her husband soon after, learning that the story had been made up.

The woman was unharmed, RCSO wants the publics help in finding the man involved in the crime.

The suspect is described as a man in his late 30s or early 40s, around 6'3, with a medium build and light-colored hair. He could be driving an older model Silver Dodge Charger marked like a Highway Patrol vehicle.

Deputies said he could be charged with impersonating a law enforcement officer.

Anyone with information is asked to call 911.
