ASHEBORO, N.C. — A man is facing charges after a stand-off with police while he was inside an apartment with an infant Friday.

Asheboro police said they received an assault call for an apartment on the 600 block of East Central Avenue shortly before 9:30 a.m.

When officers arrived a woman told them she had been attacked by her boyfriend Matthew Thomas Watts and that he was in the apartment with their four-month-old baby.

Police were able to make contact with Watts but he refused to leave the apartment.

Officers asked Watts to leave the apartment for nearly for four hours but he did not leave the apartment.

During the negotiations, officers monitored the safety of the child and officers did not believe the child was in immediate danger.

Officers confirmed the child was upstairs and Watts was downstairs, then they forced their way into the apartment.

Watts was taken into custody and the child was returned the woman uninjured.

Watts is charged with:

  • Assault on a female
  • Resist, Delay, and Obstruct a Law Enforcement Officer
  • Interfering with 911 Communications

He is being held in Randolph County Jail. Bond has been denied.

The Asheboro Police Department was helped by the Randolph County Sheriff's Office.
