Man charged after reports of gunshots heard in Elon on Friday, police say

The man was taken to the Alamance County Jail with a $5,000 secured bond.

ELON, N.C. — A man has been arrested and charged after police responded to reports of gunshots fired in Elon on Friday, according to the Elon Police Department. 

Matthew Dylan Earnhardt, 23, of Winston-Salem, was charged with the following: 

  • Discharging a firearm in the city limits

  • Carrying a concealed handgun

  • Communicating threats

  • Possession of marijuana greater than 1/2 ounce

  • Possession of marijuana paraphernalia

On Friday, Nov. 1 around 1 a.m., officers on patrol said they heard what they believed to be a gunshot near West Haggard Avenue in Elon. 

Police said they spoke with witnesses who stated two men were acting aggressively and were asked to leave a party on West Lebanon Avenue. After the men were asked to leave, gunshots were heard in the area. 

According to police, three .40 caliber shell casings were recovered from a residence on West Lebanon Avenue. 

Earnhardt was taken to the Alamance County Jail with a $5,000 secured bond.

Police said the incident is believed to be isolated and there is no ongoing threat to the community. Additional officers from the Gibsonville Police Department and Elon University Campus Police were dispatched to assist.
