WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Police said the suspect in a kidnapping and assault case out of Winston-Salem faces new charges, including shooting at officers.
Police charged Cortez Ireland with assault with a deadly weapon on a law enforcement official. In addition, he's now charged with felony attempted first-degree murder and felony discharging a weapon into occupied property.
He's in jail with no bond allowed.
Police said this all happened on June 25. It started at an apartment complex on Meadow Ridge Court.
WSPD said Ireland held two women at gunpoint inside the apartment and assaulted one of them. They said he also fired a shot into the ceiling.
According to a report, Ireland took off with another individual who was inside the apartment as well. Officers found them while circulating the area and approached them. WSPD said shots were fired toward the officers, and one of the officers fired back. Ireland and the other individual were taken into custody. No one was injured during the exchange of gunfire.
Police said there is no danger to the community and all the individuals involved know each other.
