Man arrested after holding two women at gunpoint in Winston-Salem apartment, police say

Winston-Salem police said Cortez Ireland was arrested and facing multiple charges including felony second-degree kidnapping.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — UPDATE: Winston-Salem police said Cortez Ireland was charged for the assault with a deadly weapon on a law enforcement official, felony Attempted First Degree Murder, and felony Discharging a Weapon into Occupied Property. He is being held in the Forsyth County Law Enforcement Detention Center with no bond allowed.

A man is arrested after holding two women at gunpoint inside an apartment in Winston-Salem overnight Tuesday, according to police.

Officers responded to the 800 block of Meadow Ridge Court around 2:15 a.m. after a reported assault with a deadly weapon call for service.

Officers were circulating the area near the incident where they found Cortez Ireland, 23, and two other people. Police say Ireland was holding a gun in his hand.

While approaching the three individuals, one of them shot at officers hitting the patrol car. One of the officers fired his duty weapon four times and the three of them ran away.

Shortly after, two of the individuals were taken into custody without incident. A gun was found on Ireland.

No one was injured during the exchange of gunfire between the suspect and officers.

Investigation revealed that before officers arrived on the scene, four people were at an apartment when Ireland physically assaulted one of the victims, according to police.

Police said Ireland held two women at gunpoint, then shot his gun into the ceiling. Ireland and the fourth person in the apartment left the scene. During the incident, one of the victim's phones was taken from the apartment. No one was hurt.

Ireland was arrested and faces multiple charges including felony second-degree kidnapping. He is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday.

Police said there is no danger to the community at this time. Those involved in the incident all knew each other.

The officer's identity will also not be released at this time. The officer has been placed on administrative duty as it is the department's standard procedure.

This investigation is ongoing.
