Man arrested in Thomasville jewelry store robbery after chase, police say

THOMASVILLE, N.C. — A Concord man is facing charges after he was accused of robbing a jewelry store and leading officers on a chase in Thomasville.

Thomasville police said they responded to Avis Jewelry on Randolph Street on a breaking and entering in progress around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday. 

Officers said the 911 caller said a man broke into the side window of the jewelry store and  then they saw a car drive away a short time later.

Police flooded the area and found the car traveling on Julian Avenue. An officer turned around on the car and tried to pull the car over, but the driver did not stop.

Police chased the car into the back of the Pinnacle Bank parking lot where the suspect almost struck the back of the bank building. An officer then pulled behind the suspect's car and exited to instruct the driver to surrender.

The suspect placed his car in reverse and hit the officer's car causing minor damage.

The suspect's car continued to drive south on Julian Avenue into the intersection of Randolph Street.

The car then jumped the curb at the Sunrise Diner and then hit a guy wire to a utility pole. The car then came to a rest in the parking lot and the suspect got out of the car and ran away.

Officers caught up to the man as he ran into a creek.

After a brief scuffle in the water officers were able to arrest the man.

Police found around $53,000 in jewelry inside the suspect's vehicle.

Officers identified the suspect as Reginald Martinez Grissom, 44, of Concord.

He was charged with assault with a deadly weapon, breaking and entering. larceny, preparation to commit breaking and entering, possession of stolen goods, resisting arrest, felonious speed to elude, and reckless driving,

Grissom is being held in the Davidson County Jail under no bond.

He is scheduled to appear in court March 20 in Lexington.
