GREENSBORO, N.C. — Greensboro police said they are investigating a rape at a senior living home.
Officers said on Monday, staff at Harmony at Greensboro reported that a man was found in the shower with an elderly female resident. The senior home employees said the man ran from the building.
Police identified the suspect as 58-year-old Edward John McLaughlin, who they said is also a registered sex offender. McLaughlin was later arrested and charged with second-degree rape and felony breaking and entering.
Police said McLaughlin broke a window to get inside the facility. The national sex offender database shows he was convicted of rape twice in New York. He's in jail in Guilford County on a $5.5 million bond.
Police said the woman went to a hospital for evaluation. It's unclear if she had injuries.
The facility released a statement following the incident:
Harmony at Greensboro is addressing a security breach that occurred on the morning of Monday, January 15. Our team immediately responded and initiated all necessary protocols; securing all entrances and exits, and conducting a headcount of all residents and associates. Local law enforcement was contacted, and we are cooperating fully to help them investigate the matter. Harmony associates helped identify the suspect leading to his arrest. We will support prosecution to the full extent of the law.
Initial findings suggest that the breach was an isolated incident, and there is no ongoing threat to the safety of our residents. The safety and security of our residents are paramount, and we are reviewing what occurred and will take any appropriate measures to enhance our protocols. Our dedicated associates are providing support and assistance to those directly affected, and counseling services are available for residents and their families.
Harmony at Greensboro remains a community built on trust and care, and we are grateful for the continued support of our residents and their families. Our team is working tirelessly to ensure the ongoing safety and security of everyone in our community.
This investigation is ongoing.
