Man arrested for breaking into church in Mount Airy, deputies say

Surry County deputies said they arrested Johnathan Samuel Nichols Sunday for breaking into and damaging a church in Mount Airy.

SURRY COUNTY, N.C. — A man is arrested after damaging and robbing a Surry County Church Sunday, according to deputies. 

Deputies responded to Calvary Baptist Church on South Franklin Road about a breaking and entering in Mount Airy. Upon arrival, they found extensive damage within the facility. 

During the investigation, deputies identified Johnathan Samuel Nichols, 34, as the suspect. 

Nichols forced his way into the church damaging doors, windows, and walls throughout the facility and taking items from the church. 

Shortly after the call to the church, deputies found Nichols at the Food Lion on West Lebanon Street in Mount Airy and arrested him. 

Deputies were able to recover some of the stolen items taken from Calvary Baptist Church. 

Nichols is facing multiple charges including breaking and entering to a place of worship. He received a $63,500 bond and is expected to appear in court on May 1. He is currently placed in the Surry County Detention Center.
