EDEN, N.C. — An Eden Police Department officer was injured Sunday after he was dragged by a vehicle while trying to make a traffic stop.
According to the Eden Police Department, officers conducted a traffic stop on a 2004 Buick Lesabre on Stadium Drive just east of Edgewood Road. During the stop, Jerry Mitchell of Reidsville — the operator of the vehicle — allegedly became resistant and would not follow officers' instructions.
Officers say Mitchell took off in his vehicle, dragging an officer down the road behind him in the process. He continued east on Stadium Drive before another officer used a PIT maneuver to stop the vehicle.
Mitchell was arrested and charged with:
- 1 felony county of flee to elude arrest
- 1 felony count of assault on a law enforcement officer
- 1 felony county of resisting a public officer causing serious bodily injury
- 1 misdemeanor account of assault with a deadly weapon
- 2 misdemeanor counts of reckless driving
- 1 misdemeanor count of assault on a government official
Mitchell is currently being held without bond at the Rockingham County Magistrate's Office. He is scheduled to appear in court for the first time on Nov. 14.
