Five months after man found dead in backyard, police arrest murder suspect

Five months after James White was found dead in a backyard, police have arrested someone for his murder.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Greensboro police have made an arrest in a September murder investigation

On Thursday, five months after a deadly shooting on Luray Drive, police arrested 24-year-old Kaleb Horton for the murder of 30-year-old James White. Horton was charged with first-degree murder and is being held in jail without bond.

The investigation began on the morning of September 18, 2023. Police responded to an aggravated assault on Luray Drive. They found White with life-threatening injuries. He did not survive.

Neighbors share safety concerns

Neighbors in the area told WFMY News 2 crews they heard several shots fired while watching football the night before White was found dead.

While many of them didn't want to go on camera because of safety concerns, they said they could feel the vibration of the gun when it went off.

T'Erick Gilbert lives close by. He says the area is riddled with crime and it makes him want to pick up and move his family.

"I unfortunately have to get back to work and my son is homeschooled. So, I am going to have to leave him here to go back to work in hopes that a bullet doesn't come through the window or violence doesn't overtake my household," Gilbert explained.

James R. Butler Sr. owns businesses beside the opposite end of the shopping center.

He's been in the area for over 50 years and says they try their best to keep their customers safe and their store untouched.

"Violence is all over everywhere. So, I don't know what it's going to take to fix it, really to tell the truth. I just try to, we try to run a smooth operation, deal with people and hope they deal with us, and we go home at night we got insurance and burglary alarms and all of this, go home and get a nap and come on back to work," Butler recalled.
