CARROLL COUNTY, Va. — The remains of a boy who's been missing since 2003 were positively identified, deputies said.

Carroll County deputies said 5-year-old Logan Nathaniel Bowman disappeared in Grayson County, VA in January 2003. Since then, his mother Cynthia Davis, and her then-boyfriend Dennis Schermerhorn were charged in connection to his disappearance.

On Sept. 6, the sheriff's office received a call about human remains found near a wooded area by Iron Ridge Road in Galax, VA.

An investigation determined that these remains had been at the location for an extended period of time.

After submitting two direct DNA comparisons of family members to a private company that specializes in Forensic Genetic Genealogy and Forensic-Grade Genome Sequencing, they identified the remains as being Bowman.

Deputies said new charges are forthcoming as this investigation is ongoing.
