LIBERTY, N.C. — A former officer is facing a charge after a crash.
Police said they responded to a crash involving two cars on Old Liberty Road Wednesday shortly before 6 p.m.
One of the people involved in the crash was an off-duty Liberty police officer.
Police said he was in his own car and on his way to report for duty.
The crash happened outside of city limits and the North Carolina Highway Patrol was asked to handle the investigation as is standard procedure.
During the investigation, troopers developed probable cause to charge the officer with driving while impaired.
Liberty police identified the former officer as Kevin Robert Carey, 50, of Siler City.
He worked as an officer with Liberty police for nearly four years.
The criminal investigation is being handled by the NCSHP.
Police said he is no longer employed by the town.
