COLFAX, N.C. — State officials, city governments, and law enforcement agencies across the Tar Heel State are extending condolences to those who knew the off-duty police officer who was shot and killed Saturday afternoon.
Lt. Governor and Greensboro native, Mark Robinson shared this message on social media Saturday night:
"Yolanda and I offer our deepest condolences to the family and friends of this fallen officer, and the entire Greensboro Police Department. We honor this brave officer for making the ultimate sacrifice in protecting our city. I ask all of North Carolina to join us in lifting the officers’ loved ones and the Greensboro PD up in prayer. Let us recommit to supporting law enforcement in this heartbreaking moment. I’ve spoken to the Greensboro Police Chief - my office stands ready to support them in any way we can. Authorities have issued a Blue Alert for a vehicle involved in the incident - if you see a black Chevrolet Equinox SUV with NC tag KKA-4332 call 911 right away."
Governor Roy Cooper posted the following message to social media Saturday night:
"I spoke with Greensboro Police Chief Thompson earlier this evening offering all available state resources to catch those who killed a Greensboro police officer. Our prayers are with the Greensboro police and family and loved ones. Every effort must be made to apprehend those responsible and bring justice in this tragic situation. - RC"
Attorney General, Josh Stein shared Governor Cooper's post adding this message to it:
"My heart goes out to the family and colleagues of the Greensboro police officer who was murdered this afternoon. Please join me in praying for them and for the immediate capture of the killers. We owe so much to law enforcement who put their lives on the line to keep us safe."
Several law enforcement agencies and cities across North Carolina are posting too, from the mountains to the coast.
Haywood County sheriff's office posted the following message on social media Sunday morning:
"We mourn with you Greensboro. Please keep the family and the co-workers of the Greensboro Police Sergeant who was shot and killed yesterday in your heart and in your prayers."
The City of New Bern, NC Government shared Greensboro police department's post adding this message to it:
"Our thoughts & prayers are with the Greensboro Police Department."
Within a post, Greensboro police said in part:
"Please keep their family in your prayers over the coming days. We love all of you who have reached out and shown your support."
Nick Ruffner, PR Manager for Sheetz released this statement:
Sheetz is incredibly saddened by the violence that took place at our store on Sandy Ridge Road yesterday afternoon. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Greensboro police department and the family of the police officer that lost his life.
The safety of our customers and employees at Sheetz is a top priority in every community we serve. We are working with the police department to investigate this matter and will do whatever we can to assist with the ongoing investigation.
