Sgt. Nix's accused killer claims he was defending himself, attorney says

A judge denied bond for a suspect and denied to reduce bond for another suspect tied to the Sgt. Dale Nix murder case.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — A judge denied a bond request for the accused killer of Greensboro police sergeant Dale Nix.

18-year-old Jamere Foster's attorney argued in court Thursday that Foster was "afraid" of Nix before fatally shooting him outside a Sheetz.

"When Jamere shot Sgt. Nix, Jamere was defending himself. Jamere did not know that Sgt. Nix was a police officer because Sgt. Nix was in plain clothes and did not identify himself as a police officer. Jamere believed that this man in plain clothes was going to shoot him and kill him because this man drew a gun and began walking toward him at his car with his gun pointed at Jamere within seconds of Jamere walking out of the store with stolen beer. Jamere did not have a gun on him when he went into the store, and he only pulled a gun from his car when this stranger was right at Jamere’s driver door. The death of Sgt. Nix is clearly a tragedy. But through the eyes of 18-year-old Jamere, this was a middle-aged man coming at him with a gun. Jamere was afraid that this man was going to shoot him and that he would die," Foster's attorney said in a statement.

Foster, who faces a first-degree murder charge, is being held in jail without bond. His attorney said he should be approved for a secured bond, but a judge disagreed.

Another suspect in the shooting, 18-year-old Z’quriah Blackwell, was also in court Thursday. A request for her bond to be reduced to $100,000 was also denied. She remains in jail under a $500,000 bond.

THE CRIME

Investigators said Sgt. Nix was off-duty when he saw Foster and 28-year-old James Morrison stealing beer from the Sheetz. Police said Nix tried to stop them, and that’s when Foster shot him multiple times.

The two men then took off with Blackwell, who was waiting in a car, according to police.

Foster faces a first-degree murder charge. He had no prior convictions.

Investigators said Morrison and Blackwell face an accessory after the fact charge.

Foster and Blackwell's next court date is July 23.
