IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. — Scammers are using text messages to collect phony fines for express lanes on Interstate 77 in the Charlotte area, deputies say.
The Iredell County Sheriff's Office posted on Facebook that it has received numerous reports about people receiving text messages from someone claiming to be "NCQUICKPASSTOLLSERVICES.COM." The message advises the person to avoid hefty fines by clicking a link and entering their personal information.
It's a scam. The North Carolina Turnpike Authority will never alert express lane users to fines via text message. The FBI issued a warning about this scam back in April. Truman Kain, a security researcher, said criminals usually ask for a small amount, like $50, to appear legit. They're also well-prepared for any questions a person may have.
Kain says with scammers getting more creative these days, it's critical to take a few seconds to slow down when you get a text message that prompts any action, like paying a bill or clicking any link. If something seems off, there's probably a reason.
"Attackers don't want you to think, they want to get you to click or take some action," Kain explained. "So any time you get something with a sense of urgency, you want to stop, taking a minute and think first. Is this even relevant to me? If I'm not driving on toll roads, it's certainly not relevant."
