Man arrested after holding women hostage during standoff in Greensboro neighborhood, police say

The barricaded person was charged with second-degree kidnapping.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — A tense standoff in a Greensboro neighborhood is over and a suspect is in custody.

It all started around 8 a.m. Tuesday on Immanuel Road. Police said a man was holding two women hostage inside a home. The situation sent a nearby school into a shelter-in-place.

Court documents show 33-year-old Adam Newell lives at the home. Police said they were trying to serve him a warrant after he failed to appear in court on other charges. Now, he’s also charged with kidnapping.

Investigators said Newell had a gun and was holding two women inside, including a teenage girl. Police said he pointed a gun at the other woman during the standoff.

The relationship between Newell and the two women isn’t clear, but police said the women were able to leave the home before police arrested Newell just before 11 a.m.

Police said no one was hurt and no shots were fired.

Greensboro police credited their training for the peaceful outcome.

“All of these special teams, they train annually, they train monthly. They have separate individual training, according to their expertise, and then we bring that training together, where they all train as a unit for the specific types of situations,” said Assistant Greensboro Police Chief Milford Harris.

The standoff happened very close to Hunter Elementary School. The school went into a shelter-in-place as a precaution. That was lifted once police arrested Newell.

Harris explained, "when we received that call, and we realized that it was right across the street from the school we had immediate contact with Guilford County School personnel. We put the school on lockdown, and made sure the children were in a safe location in the school in reference to the location of the house because it was in very close proximity. This couldn't have ended any better. This is what we hope for when we bring all of the units together. We worked collaboratively to have this peacefully resolved."

Newell is being held at the Guilford County Jail without bond. He faces two counts of second-degree kidnapping and one could of assault by pointing a gun.

Court documents show Newell has a long record consisting of charges from larceny to possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, and interfering with an electronic monitoring device.

The teams involved in the arrest Tuesday include: the Special Response Team (SRT), Hostage Negotiation Team (HNT), Violent Crime Reduction Team (VCRT), and the Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT).

🚨ALERT🚨 All traffic is asked to avoid Immanuel Road for an active police investigation. This does not involve Hunter Elementary School and students are safe.
