WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A woman was arrested after Winston-Salem police said she "intentionally" set a home on fire Friday.
The Winston-Salem Police Department said they received a call to the 1500 block of East 3rd Street about an arson. Officers said Winston-Salem fire crews were on the scene due to a house fire that was intentionally set from the outside just after 6:00 a.m.
Investigators said there were five people and one dog in the house at the time of the fire. Everyone was able to safely exit the house except a dog that died in the fire.
Investigators identified 57-year-old Mechelle Smith as she was charged with the following:
- Five counts of Attempted Murder
- First Degree Arson
- Felony Cruelty to Animals
Police said she is behind bars without bond.
This investigation is ongoing.
