HIGH POINT, N.C. — The High Point Interim Police Chief has deemed a video where officers appeared to be using excessive force justifiable on Monday, April 29.
The interim police chief released a statement that said officers' use of force caught on camera early in April was reasonable and compliant with department policy.
The use of force investigation stems from an April 8 incident at the Intown Suites on North Main Street. Police were trying to track down a larceny suspect linked to a call from the nearby Walmart. The video took off on social media, showing the arrest in progress. In the video, it showed five officers arresting two men.
The recording shows punches getting thrown and one officer using a baton. Interim Police Chief Curtis Cheeks said in a statement that the use of force in this case was only in response to a suspect's resistance to a lawful arrest. He went on to say the actions of the police officers were necessary to do their official and lawful duty to arrest both suspects.
The interim chief also reinforced that his department took the use of force seriously and said this review was based on all reports, videos and statements given on the incident.
