Judge denies request for release of former High Point officer convicted in January 6 US Capitol attack

HIGH POINT, N.C. — A judge denied the request for the release of a Triad officer convicted in the January 6 attacks against the Capitol.

A team representing former High Point police officer Laura Steele asked a judge to let her out while waiting for her conviction to play out. Court docs show that Steele is seeking an appeal, but it's unclear when or if her appeal will be heard.

A judge sentenced Steele on Sept. 15., 2023 to a year in prison. She is also facing three years of supervised release and will be on house arrest six months after her release.

Steele was convicted of the following seven counts:

  • Conspiracy to Obstruct an Official Proceeding
  • Obstruction of an Official Proceeding and Aiding and Abetting
  • Conspiracy to Prevent an Officer from Discharging any Duties
  • Destruction of Government Property and Aiding and Abetting
  • Entering and Remaining in a Restricted Building or Grounds
  • Civil Disorder and Aiding and Abetting
  • Tampering with documents or Proceedings and Aiding and Abetting
