HIGH POINT, N.C. — The State Bureau of Investigation is currently handling the death investigation of a man who died in High Point on Saturday night.
According to the High Point Police Department, officers responded to Ridgebrooke Drive at approximately 9:10 p.m. on Saturday in reference to a "death by firearm." When they arrived, they found 32-year-old Hasson Williams suffering from a single gunshot wound to the head.
Williams was transported to Atrium Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. He later died of his injuries.
The High Point Police Department's Violent Crimes Unit responded to the scene and started an investigation, but the decision was made to contact the State Bureau of Investigation after "it was discovered that an involved party may be related to a City of High Point elected official."
According to the High Point Police Department, the decision to hand over the investigation to the SBI was made "to ensure that a fair and impartial investigation is completed."
It is not clear whether Williams' death is being investigated as a homicide.
"On October 23, 2024, the SBI received a request from the High Point Police Department to investigate a shooting death that happened on Saturday, October 19, 2024," a SBI spokesperson said Thursday. "We are in the early stages of the investigation. No additional information is available at this time."
We reached out to High Point police, a PIO with the city, and all city council members. Several saying they heard about the case but don’t know any details about it. We also reached out to the SBI.
