ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, N.C. — The Democratic Party in Rockingham County wants answers after someone vandalized a billboard of Democratic Presidential Candidate, Kamala Harris.

A viewer shared photos of the billboard with WFMY News 2 Monday morning. It appears to show white and red paint blotches all over it, possibly put there by a paintball gun.

Rockingham County Democratic Party leaders drove by the billboard on Highway 220/I-73 in Madison and confirmed the damage. The group said it called the sheriff's office to file a report.

“It’s sad that the political climate has come to this in our county. In no way as a party do we condone the vandalism or theft of campaign signs regardless of candidate or party. We have had several incidents in recent weeks of signs being knocked down or removed, and the worst incident was the stealing of our signs around and on the hay bale that our party decorated for the Mayodan 'What the Hay Fest.' That theft actually occurred on town property," said Rockingham County Democratic Party Chair, Jeff Webster.

WFMY News 2 reached out to the Republican Party of Rockingham County. The group said it does not condone actions like this whatsoever.

“This is disgraceful... The Republican Party does not encourage damage such as this! Every American choosing to run for office has the freedom to make their signs public without fear of vandalism. Freedom is what those that have gone before us have fought valiantly for," said Diane Parnell, Rockingham County Republican Party Chair, Diane Parnell.

Webster said his group also called the advertising company to inform them about the vandalism. He said the company offered no timeline in when it would be replaced.
