GREENSBORO, N.C. — Greensboro police said they are investigating a rape at a senior living home.
Officers said on Monday, staff at Harmony at Greensboro reported that a man was found in the shower with an 89-year-old female resident. The senior home employees said the man ran from the building.
Police identified the suspect as 58-year-old Edward John McLaughlin, who they said is also a registered sex offender. McLaughlin was later arrested and charged with second-degree rape and felony breaking and entering.
911 calls revealed that the facility didn't know McLaughlin, and had never seen him before.
Police said McLaughlin broke a window to get inside the facility. The national sex offender database shows he was convicted of rape twice in New York. He's in jail in Guilford County on a $5.5 million bond.
Police said the woman went to a hospital for evaluation and is doing okay.
Harmony at Greensboro released an updated statement regarding the incident:
We are reviewing our physical security as well as training protocols for dealing with potential intruders. We conduct regular reviews of our policies related to resident care and safety.
We will be updating the community on any changes we are making next week and the weeks that follow.
The previous statement released by the facility:
Harmony at Greensboro is addressing a security breach that occurred on the morning of Monday, January 15. Our team immediately responded and initiated all necessary protocols; securing all entrances and exits, and conducting a headcount of all residents and associates. Local law enforcement was contacted, and we are cooperating fully to help them investigate the matter. Harmony associates helped identify the suspect leading to his arrest. We will support prosecution to the full extent of the law.
