Man arrested after Hanes Mall shooting, police say

Police said the shooting stemmed from an argument inside the mall between the suspect and the victim.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A man was arrested after a reported shooting at Hanes Mall on Wednesday afternoon, according to the Winston-Salem Police Department.

Police said they responded around 3:30 p.m. and found one person injured outside of the mall.

Elise Hayes was getting a massage in the mall on her day off when she said it was interrupted by shots fired near where she was.

"At first we all thought maybe someone dropped something heavy on the floor. It sounded like a gunshot but we weren't sure," Hayes said. "When we heard it again and we saw people running by the door we knew at that point there was a shooter in there."

The victim was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

While police searched for the suspect Hayes said she was hiding in a back room for nearly 40 minutes before she was directed out the back of the building.

"This is the first time I've dealt with an active shooter situation. We hear about it all the time and I don't take much thought into it," Hayes said. "I'm pro-gun but being  in this situation it makes you change your thoughts maybe there should be more regulations."

According to police, the suspect was located at 3330 Silas Creek Parkway and was taken into custody.

Two summers ago another shotting occurred at Hanes Mall.

It was at the food court and one person was shot.

Police said Wednesday's shooting stemmed from an argument between the shooter and victim.

The suspect was identified as Angelo Addie Reid VI, 22. Charges are pending, police said.

He was found hiding out near the Best Western hotel close to the mall and taken into custody.

It appears to be an isolated incident and there is no danger to the community, police said.

Hanes Mall is no longer on lockdown.

Forsyth Tech sent an alert out to students and staff about the shooting.

Several people are chiming in on social media about what happened.

Holly Calhoun said she received an "I love you" text from her daughter who was inside the mall when the shooting happened. She said her daughter and two other family members are hiding in a store until they are able to leave.

Staci Foltz works at the mall and told WFMY News 2 that she and her staff members are okay, and unfortunately, this isn't the first time something like this has happened at the mall.

This is a developing story.
