WILSON, N.C. — One of three men charged in connection with the Monday shooting of a North Carolina Highway patrolman hit the trooper in the neck and face with gunfire during a traffic stop, an arrest warrant says.
Trooper Daniel C. Harrell's cruiser appeared to have 12 bullet holes in the front windshield after the shooting around 5:30 p.m. on Haynes Road in Wilson County.
John David Jones, 36, of Chickasaw Court in Wilson, is facing several charges, including assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill/inflict serious injury.
An arrest warrant released Tuesday said at the time "there was gross impairment of the defendant's faculties while driving due to consumption of an impairing substance."
The warrant also said Jones' driver's license had been revoked.
Harrell was taken to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville with serious, but non-life threatening injuries.
Harrell is a third-generation trooper and was sworn in on May 30, 2014.
Jones was the third person taken into custody. Officers apprehended him just after midnight Tuesday morning. Officials said he was found in woods off of Cattail Road near Weaver Road.
Jones was taken to Wilson Medical Center with minor injuries, officials said.
Two others had been taken into custody prior to Jones. William Allen Boswell, 40, and Bryan Jeffrey Mullins, 25, are both charged with possession of a stolen motor vehicle. They are each being held on a $15,000 secure bond.
The suspect's vehicle was found on Ervin Place off Cattail Road, officials said. Around 11:20 p.m., CBS 17's Colleen Quigley heard a series of loud blasts at that scene. She then saw an ambulance arriving.
Jones is also charged with assault on a law enforcement officer, assault on a female, possession of stolen motor vehicle, breaking or entering, and larceny after breaking/entering.
